from a 38 to a 2 feet morgan!

we sold our beautiful puerto seguro. we have had this boat since 2003. first under the name of freebird when it was esteban’s home. then in 2008, we changed its name; completely refitted and changed its equipment and looks; and made puerto seguro into the fierce sailing machine and beautiful home that took us around the world from 2009 through 2012. at the end of 2012 our morgan was born and we decided to drop anchors for some time. since January 2013 we have been together in dry land enjoying as a family, coping with diapers and feedings through the night,- which make long overnight passages seem like a breeze! we sold puerto seguro in May 2013.

andre, we wish you the best of luck and good winds. we are sure this beloved boat will change your life as it did ours.

the end

on january 1, 2013 i went to Miami to austral marina to meet esteban and peter. the marina from where we left in 2009. it was a very emotional moment. we were so happy! we then drove home and esteban met morgan. what a moment, we were together at last!!!!

now we have the boat in a beautiful marina/hotel in fort lauderdale and will stay here for some time. we want to work and save some money, enjoy our morgan and see him grow and of course, hope to go sailing again; we would love to do that in the future, this time as a family with our son.

morgan arrives

morgan was born on december 17 at night while esteban was at sea. the birth was rough, just like esteban's passage; but at the end he arrived healthy and beautiful.  I was beaten after a rough delivery but happy to meet our morgan for the first time!!!

returning home

After the end of october I was not able to fly anymore because of the baby and my eight months of pregnancy. during the month of november I stayed home in florida and esteban in cartagena getting the boat ready to sail back home in december.

Peter flew from london to sail the boat with esteban from cartagena to florida. there were two possible routes planned. the first from cartagena to san andres, then the north of honduras towards yucatan in mexico; a stop in isla mujeres and then a final sail through the gulfstream from mexico to key west. the second was identical to the leg we had done several years before when we departed.: due north from cartagena to jamaica and then from there through the windward passage to bahamas and finally bordering cuba all the way to miami. peter and esteban finally decided on the second route. it was shorter and had less days and miles of not so favorable wind direction. they left club nautico on december 15 and had to come back that same night. the wind from the north was stronger than predicted and they could not make any progress out of cartagena. so they went back enjoyed a last unexpected club colombia (beer) and sailed back out the next morning. the sail was rough as expected. to us, this was unbelievable. the single most difficult leg of our entire circumnavigation through all the oceans in the world was the leg from cartagena to jamaica. it was tough when we did it southbound back in 2009 and also tough now in this northbound direction. we had rough single storms in other places but they never lasted more than a day. the problem with this leg is that it really had no storms or really nasty weather, it is simply unpleasant with big waves and a lot of wind from the wrong direction for five days straight. that is why we hope not to have to sail this leg a third time.



new crew!!!!

the best news ever...

we are celebrating the news of a new crew member!!! he will join later this year, in december to be exact. he does not know how to sail or even swim. we do not know if he will like the water or if he will get sea sick…we do not even know his name yet, only that it is a boy and that he will join us and sail and do everything with us… and we are so happy about it!!!

the plans...

after finishing the med, i returned to my previous job and esteban stayed in gibraltar doing much required and needed maintenance to the boat. once the 2011 hurricane season is over, he will cross the atlantic with a friend and arrive in the caribbean for christmas where i will join him to sail the boat through to finish our circumnavigation in january of 2012!! stay tuned for more news and the soon to start posts on the crossing to the canary islands, and the atlantic ocean back to the continent where we started: america!
